He’s energetic, curious and not afraid of a challenge – and at 18, Monty Warr is already showing what a motivated newcomer can achieve.

Whether it’s tackling a week packed with inspections or learning from some of the best in the business, he's throwing himself into every opportunity that comes his way.

We sat down with Monty to hear more about his experience so far, what drives him and where he hopes to go next.

What made you want to pursue a career in real estate, and how did you get started?

I’ve always been interested in property, especially the idea of buying and selling and understanding how the market works. Eventually I want to invest in property myself.

I wasn’t quite sure what direction to take after I finished high school. A career counsellor suggested I might be suited to sales, and one of my teachers – who was completing his Registration course – recommended I look into real estate. A couple of months later, I reached out to REIWA Training and got started.

How did you get started at Rentwest, and what kind of work are you doing?

My mentor Alison had spent some time at Rentwest and helped me get an interview. I actually started when I was 17, helping out behind the scenes. Now that I’ve turned 18, I’m out on the road doing inspections, Property Condition Reports (PCRs) and home opens – and I’m loving it.

One week I did 11 inspections in a single day. It’s busy, but I enjoy that pace. Home opens are my favourite part – I get to meet a lot of people and have good conversations. It feels like a natural fit.

What course are you completing and how are you finding it?

I’m doing the Unrestricted Registration course through REIWA Training. I originally considered the online option, but I chose the 10-day in-person course – and I’m really glad I did. The trainers were excellent and made sure we truly understood the content, not just the assessment questions.

Jason was one of my favourites. He knows everything. He’d be reciting laws and codes of conduct from memory and it honestly blew me away. I’ve already started applying some of the things he taught us on the job.

I’ve still got a bit of coursework to go, but it’s all clicking into place and I’ve felt supported the whole way.

What are your career goals?

Right now, my focus is finishing my training and gaining the experience I need to get my real estate licence. You need two years in the industry before you can apply, so I want to get that started as soon as possible.

I’m keen to keep learning and build my experience at Rentwest. It’s a great place to grow and get the foundation I need.

Having someone like Suzanne Brown to look up to has been a big motivator. She got her real estate licence at 21, and now she’s REIWA President – and my boss at Rentwest. It definitely sets a high bar, but in a good way. There’s a bit of friendly competition in the back of my mind to see if I can get my licence even sooner. But more than that, it’s just inspiring to see what’s possible when you work hard and back yourself.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I like to play the piano, and basketball with my mates. I also spend a lot of time reading, studying and going to the gym – I’m always looking for ways to improve myself.

A lot of people focus on having fun in their twenties, but I think if you knuckle down early, you can set yourself up and enjoy life later on.

What advice would you give someone thinking about a career in real estate?

Just go for it. If you enjoy talking to people and pushing yourself, it’s a great path. There’s a lot of independence, and the more you put in, the more you’ll get out of it – you’re making the calls, having the conversations and driving your own progress.
