Get winter-ready with our home prep checklist

Wind, rain, and storms can be a concern for home owners but a few simple maintenance steps can help protect your home and avoid costly surprises.

Get winter ready

As the cooler months roll in, now is the perfect time to prepare your property for winter weather. Wind, rain, and storms can be a concern for home owners but a few simple maintenance steps can help protect your home and avoid costly surprises.

With this quick winter checklist, you can be prepared and keep your property safe and storm-ready.

Clean Gutters and Downpipes

Blocked gutters can cause water to overflow and damage your roof, fascia, and even your home’s foundations. Clear out leaves and debris and check for any cracks, rust or sagging sections that might need repairing.

Trim trees and bushes

Overhanging branches pose a risk in high winds and heavy rain, especially if they're near power lines or your roof. Trim back trees or shrubs to reduce the chance of storm damage or electrical hazards.

Inspect outdoor power points and lights

Check external lights, power outlets and extension cords for cracks, corrosion or damage. Damaged fittings can trip your power or become safety hazards when exposed to water.

Secure loose items

Outdoor furniture, play equipment, tools and decorations have the potential to become airborne in strong winds. Store them away or anchor them securely to prevent property damage or injury.

Taking just an hour or two now to carry out these checks can make all the difference when the winter weather hits.

Living in a rental?

A few small checks can keep you comfortable and help you meet your tenancy obligations.

  • Notify your landlord or property manager if gutters or downpipes are overflowing or damaged.
  • Trim small plants and report any large overhanging branches near power lines or the roof.
  • Check outdoor lights and outlets for visible damage and report any issues promptly.
  • Secure or store loose items like garden furniture, children’s play equipment and other outdoor décor to stop them becoming airborne during windy weather.
